Do Not Stare At Me by Martin Carter is a poignant and powerful poem that explores themes of identity, oppression, and the struggle for dignity. The speaker confronts the weight of societal judgment and the gaze of others, expressing a deep desire for recognition and understanding beyond mere observation. Through vivid imagery and emotional resonance, Carter critiques the dehumanizing effects of colonialism and societal expectations, ultimately advocating for a sense of agency and self-acceptance. The poem captures the tension between vulnerability and resilience, urging readers to look beyond superficial appearances and acknowledge the complexity of human experience. In the school's Speech & Drama Interhouse competition, in which I took first place, I performed this performance on behalf of my house, Darling.
